2017 in writing

I got a lot of writing done this year!

February
Possession (9,403 words), original m/m
Written for Shousetsu Bang*Bang issue 65
I changed my mind at the last minute and abandoned my original plan for this issue, which had been a variant of the Epiphany king for a day, complete with a mock execution at the end. (I'm glad I didn't, because [livejournal.com profile] zinnia13 did a much better version of that with her story The new kitchen boy in the same issue.)

This is just super-iddy dubcon with a lot of Stockholm syndrome. I hadn't written anything for over a year before I started this, and for a story written after such a long dry period, I think it's pretty good, but there's so much about it I wish I could fix.

March
The Queen of the Sunken City (2,203 words) original f/f
Written for Shousetsu Bang*Bang special issue 12
This is straight-up Yoko Tsuno fanfic with the serial numbers scrubbed off. This is the second f/f story I've written for S2B2 and the second one involving blue ladies. I don't have a thing, what are you talking about.

April
The Horror From The Deep: 10th Anniversary Special Edition (14,989 words), original m/m
Written for Shousetsu Bang*Bang issue 66
This is a substantial edit / rewrite of The Horror From The Deep, and it really is the 10th anniversary edition (the original version was released on May 5th, 2007). A  lot of what I added was from the first few drafts of the original story (the drive into town and the dream most notably.)

I also added tentacles. I added a LOT  of tentacles.

June
Summer Heat (3,324 words), original m/m
Written for Shousetsu Bang*Bang issue 67
This is a sequel to The Eagle and The Frost Giant in as much as it focuses on the same characters, but there is no plot connection and you can read it without having read the first story, mostly because there really is no plot. It's just straight-up filthy porn. I wrote the bones of it during the winter of 2016-2017, and then revised it a whole lot between then and when the issue finally went up. I suspect it might have been over-edited, alas.

October
The Sea Maid (2,600 words), original f/f
This was my [community profile] trickortreatex assigment, written for [personal profile] sathinfection . It's about a Greenland shark selkie who has been haunting a town for centuries and the young witch who rescues her. I had wanted to make it porny (yay size difference! yay xeno!) but I wasn't able to get around consent stuff. I didn't want to write dubcon about these two, and that was difficult when the witch had possession of the selkie's skin, which allowed her to compel the selkie at her whim.

My favourite part was hanging out in the Yuletide discord and pretending ignorance about pee sharks whenever Sath brought them up, like I hadn't spent the last two weeks googling these things.

Decima Physical Exam #269
(100 words), Wolf 359
This was a treat written for an account that I am pretty sure was a sock that defaulted, and the only fanfic I wrote this year. Correlation???

I love Wolf 359, and it was fun to play around in that continuity. The first draft was 179 words long, and I knew I either had to either explain a whole lot of stuff or trim it down to a drabble. I used to write a lot of drabbles, and I am lazy, so I cut.

November
Mirrored (4,425 words), original m/m
Written for Shousetsu Bang*Bang issue 69 (nice)
This is the third part in a series that started with A Night in Blue and Strays. The original outline was a lot longer, and had a parallel dream-story involving Simenon (who spends the majority of the story unconscious). I couldn't get it to work until I decided to cut the SImenon part and focus only on Dara and then I was able to bang it out in an evening.

I wrote it in 3rd omniscient because I didn't want to go inside Dara's head, but I'm not sure it was entirely successful

December
In the shadow of a scarlet moon (2,530 words), original m/m
Written for Shousetsu Bang*Bang issue 70
I think this came to me in a daydream. It's space nonsense daddy kink, and that's all you need to know. It is a very silly PWP, and it could have used a second edit, I'm afraid.

My original plan for December had been to write the (long) sequel to Mirrored, but I seriously underestimated how much the second half of 2017 would wear down my writing mojo

Overall
8 stories
40k words
2 f/f and 6 m/m
